The Trump decision in New York, and so much more
Former President Donald Trump had one of the worst weeks of his life the past seven days.
First, last Friday, Trump was hit with the EPIC court loss I had been talking about for months.
With interest, the loss wasn’t actually $350 million. It’s actually more than $450 million. And the judge in the case already denied a request to delay the enforcement of the judgment. Though it never seemed to get the correct amount of coverage, I’m proud that I discussed this verdict in September of last year, as well as in December and several times this year.
There are serious questions about how Trump will come up with that money.
Donald Trump Accused of Not Having the Cash To Pay $400M Bond.
Trump’s properties could be seized if $454 million civil fraud debt not paid, warns NY AG James
As the joke below says, this isn’t going to be easy. (Especially since the verdict states that Trump is also banned from getting loans from New York-chartered banks, a potentially devastating blow given so many major lenders are based in the city.)
Sadly for him, the bad news for Trump doesn’t stop there.
His small-dollar donors (those who give $200 or less) are down when compared to his race in 2020. In fact, he had 200,000 fewer than he had in 2019. (Having said this, to be totally fair, Trump still has more than Biden, though Biden’s numbers and fundraising amounts are rising.)
The Trump campaign and affiliated political action committees attracted roughly 516,000 donors in the second half of last year, compared with 740,000 at the same stage of his last race for the White House, according to Financial Times analysis of the latest data.
President Joe Biden had 473,000 donors in the second half of 2023 — fewer than his likely rival in this year’s White House race, but almost double the number in the second half of 2019, when Biden was competing for the Democratic nomination.
And even more sad, Trump’s bad news doesn’t end there.
His opponent, Nikki Haley raised more money than Trump did in January. I still find it hard to see her beating him in the nomination, but her attacks are getting stronger and uglier, and she will be an increasingly frustrating thorn in his side until this primary race is over.
But wait, there’s more!
The IVF decision in Alabama is already making big news and making a lot of people in the bright red state mad — even conservatives. (Three Alabama clinics pause IVF services after court ruling.)
And it’s reminding people who have not been engaged to this point just how much is on the line in this year’s election.
It’s so bad, in fact, that Alabama’s super-conservative state lawmakers are already trying to fix the mess on their hands.
Hunter Biden and Russia, Russia, Russia
Add to all of this two more terrible things for the GOP.
First, the fact that the star witness against President Biden turned out to be working with the Russians. (Links: GOP Biden impeachment witness charged for lying about Hunter. Russians 'Involved In Passing A Story' To Key Biden impeachment witness.)
Secondly, the pressure that not passing Ukraine funding is putting on Republicans and Trump is turning up and increasing.
Without question, for Trump and the GOP, it’s been a pretty bad week for sure.
The craziest thing is that Lawrence O’Donnell was absolutely right when he said almost two years ago (on Aug 19, 2022) ‘Every Day Is Worse Than The Day Before’ For Trump.
Because if I had to guess, the next week isn’t going to be much better for Trump either.
