Eight reasons to stay optimistic about all the negative news right now, including the polling
I’m not going to lie. Things feel kind of scary right now. Like the country — and world — is standing on a dangerous ledge.
The shaky Ukraine funding vote, the splintering Biden coalition over Israel/Palestine, the Texas abortion mess, the unshakable grip that Trump has over the GOP and evangelicals; all of these things have me on edge.
The moves by Jack Smith this week (fast-tracking the Supreme Court decision) give me hope that we can actually get a fair trial before the election, and Trump will probably lose his business empire in the NY judgment.
That should weaken him.
So, I’m probably just getting wobbly.
but I figure if I am, others are, too.
So, here’s a list of eight reasons to keep positive:
All recent elections have been going the Democrat’s way the past five years. Here’s a quick recap: 2018, 2020, 2022 (Kansas), and 2023 (Wisconsin).
Kentucky spells good news, as well. A Democrat won re-election there.
The Congressional map in New York just got blown up. Democrats could gain as many as 5 to 7 seats.
Millions of new, young voters will be elgible to vote. And they’ve been turning out (25% higher than previous young generations). (From The Washington Post: Every year, about 4 million Americans turn 18 and gain the right to vote. In the eight years between the 2016 and 2024 elections, that’s 32 million new eligible voters. Also every year, 2½ million older Americans die. So in the same eight years, that’s as many as 20 million fewer older voters. … A net gain of 52 million.)
The polls against Biden are ugly — but they’ve also been consistently wrong. Here’s a quick recent recap of how wrong they’ve been: Don't Fall For It: Shoddy Polling Again Pushing Doom And Gloom For Dems.
The Biden impeachment has been a train wreck so far. Even Fox News hosts are frustrated. A formal impeachment might get formalized today, but I think even if it does, the hearings will actually help clear his record.
Speaking of Bidens, Hunter Biden was indicted. And this is crucial for the rule of law, and also undermines the argument by Trump that Biden is controlling the Department of Justice, which of course, he’s not.
Finally, Poland pushed back against authoritarianism and its new government will help Ukraine substantially. See below. (Hat tip: Breathe)

— Story 2: New Polish PM Donald Tusk vows “full mobilization” of West to help Ukraine.
Hopefully, Congress somehow finds a way to get some more Ukraine funding done soon, as that is absolutely crucial.
But Biden just announced $200 million in new aid yesterday. (Biden Administration announces new security assistance for Ukraine.)
And Sweden announced $120 million yesterday, as well, as part of a winter package.
Sometimes, you just have to keep your optimism up and keep pushing forward.
This remains a dark time for the United States (and certainly for Ukraine), but let’s hope and pray we get through this as we have previous challenges in our country’s history.
Love and peace,
Stan R. Mitchell
