The GOP got rocked yesterday. Will its members save themselves?
I wonder if Donald Trump is tired of “winning” yet? After everything that happened in the past 24 hours, you kind of have to think he must be.
Yesterday, we learned DECISIVELY what we already knew: that no man is above the law in America. (Trump's sweeping immunity claim rejected by US appeals court)
And most legal analysts think the Supreme Court won’t pick this up by Monday.
So Trump is going to face a DC jury for a number of serious crimes sometime soon. Summer? Even sooner? (Trump can face trial in 2020 election interference case, not immune, appeals court rules)
But it was soooo much worse than that.
Because the GOP fumbled the ball on the goal line with their impeachment move that they’ve been working on for weeks and weeks. This completely destroyed their move that they hoped would embarrass President Biden. (Impeachment of Secretary of Homeland Security fails in stunning loss for House Republicans)
I mean, this was shocking on so many levels.
So now they’re heading into a general election this year with a Party with almost no money to spend. (Republicans Face Worst Cash Problem in a Decade)
And in the absolute worst timing move ever, Trump is such an idiot that he’s pushing out the GOP Party Chair, who has been ABSOLUTELY loyal to him. (Ronna McDaniel to decide soon on resigning as Donald Trump's GOP chair)
But the even bigger mess is that the GOP (thanks to Trump) is against a border bill that THEY demanded.
After years hyping up fears about the border — which actually is a pretty big problem — they demanded a border bill in November as part of a spending bill for Ukraine aid and Israel aid. (See below, from the linked AP article.)
Now, thanks to Trump, the deal is suddenly dead.
So, how could Trump and the GOP be so stupid?
The best reasoning I’ve seen is the below:
But this kind of sheer selfishness could complete the doom (electorally) that he’s facing in November, during the general election.
And Biden has already confirmed he will gut the Republican Party with this issue.
Will the GOP get off this train before it races off the cliff, costing many of them their seats this November?
Time will tell.
But failing to give Ukraine additional (and necessary) aid going all the way out to November is going to INFURIATE a TON of moderates like me.
And supporters of Israel are going to start getting VERY upset, too. (This happened yesterday, as well, though you probably missed the news: House fails to pass standalone Israel aid bill)
The GOP has a decision to make. The same decision it could have made a dozen times before… It can abandon Trump and vote to secure the border, fund Ukraine and Israel (and Taiwan), and possibly save some of their seats in November.
Or it can ride the Trump train off the cliff all the way to the ground. For Ukraine’s sake, I hope it’s the former.
