Shouldn’t Trump be worried, even politically speaking?
I’ve been thinking on this for several days, and I can’t help but think that sane Trump political advisors must be struggling to sleep at night.
Trump recently scored his “big” South Carolina victory last week, but was it really that big?
Sure, he beat Haley by 20, but the exit polls should be alarming for him.
Slate dug into the weeds a bit about the exit polls and why the GOP should be ringing the alarm bells:
Hundreds of thousands of voters, and a hearty 40 percent of the electorate in Saturday’s primary, voted for Nikki Haley, a supposedly globalist Republican-in-name-only traitor to the cause. He may have all but secured the nomination by running an incumbent’s campaign. But the actual incumbent, Joe Biden, won 96 percent of the vote in the South Carolina Democratic primary in early February. I invite you to imagine the punditry had Biden ceded 40 percent to Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson — or even 10 percent.
Trump underperformed polling with his margin of victory too. The FiveThirtyEight polling average showed a 28-point Trump lead, and he won by 20.
…
Trump’s weaknesses in the exit polls will ring familiar. Haley won independents, those who aren’t evangelical Christians, college graduates, first-time voters, moderates, or non–gun owners, and those who oppose a national abortion ban.
…
Come November, it’s a bloc that will decide the 2024 election.
Moving along, last night, things didn’t go much better for Trump in the Michigan primary.
The Signorile Report had a good summary of this:
Let’s make this perfectly clear: Joe Biden won the Michigan Democratic primary with over 80% of the vote, overperforming the polls, which had him under 80%.
Meanwhile, the other incumbent, Donald Trump, couldn’t crack 70%—coming in at 68.2%—as Nikki Haley is still showing his weaknesses (and 3% of Republicans voted “uncommitted”).
As in every contest so far, Trump underperformed the polling, this time by 15 points, which surely should have us questioning what the general election polls are claiming about his strength.
Without question, Trump has soooo many legal (and criminal) problems on the horizon, but I’d submit the political news isn’t much better for him.
Let’s end with two final points, moving away from Trump for the moment to the GOP.
First, on immigration, the hypocrisy the past week has been out of this world. Here’s a great summary of what the GOP was selling:
And while we’re on immigration, this made me chuckle.
Finally, we’ll end this post with the best political idea that I’ve seen in a couple of months.
Stay positive and keep the faith as we plod through this ugly election year. We’re going to get through this.
